BEING A DOER

In making their own preparations for the upcoming storm, Pastors of CEO Church, Fort Bend, Texas, Apostle Jamael and Lady Vanessa Graves, took the time to make sure everyone was safe, reporting via Facebook the dangers on the street, warning people to stay clear of areas already being flooded. The aftermath is what nobody would have imagined.

Living only a street over from where Hurricane Harvey completely destroyed homes and businesses, the Graves were spared from the devastation many would face. In their gratefulness, they immediately went out after the storm to see what, if anything they could do. Met with unimaginable ruins and the faces of people who had lost everything they owned was heartbreaking. The Pastors went to work. They were on the scene assisting victims by providing transportation to shelters, checking on loved ones and helping to rescue over fifty people and that was just day one. Knowing others were still out there homeless, scared, hungry and without hope, the Pastors came online announcing the need for food, clothing and shelter. They began calling and visiting local businesses and restaurants from areas that were not as badly damaged asking them to give and they did. Chic-Fil-A generously provided two-hundred and fifty hot sandwiches, while others called in donating non-perishables, clothing and monetary gifts to Givelify.

Thankful for all donations, it was barely enough to assist the many in need, they wanted to do more. Pastors Jamael and Lady Vanessa, then went into the communities setting up food tables in the yard of one of the residents. Feeding those who were out attempting to savage as many personal items they could from their damaged unlivable homes. Using a local hotel as their base, people unable to reach shelter began to come seeking refuge, food, clothing, diapers, milk for infants and other common necessities. The Graves were there serving along with church members, drivers from their company, Kingdom Trans, friends and volunteers making a disastrous situation calmer. To have someone reaching out to give a helping hand brings some sense of hope when you feel all is lost.

Victims from the storm are still in great need and if you too would like to bring a spark of hope to communities who need food, clothing and shelter, please do not hesitate to act. You may donate at the “green” Givelify button above for monetary gifts and simply fill out the form above for in-kind gifts of furniture, food or clothing and someone can pick it up or give you information on where to bring the items. Hearing the story is compelling; below you can see just a few examples of how church and community came together for the greater cause. Hurricane Harvey may have came, but in the end, the heart of God is what showed up.
